Let's get snappy! - Digital Photography in the Junior Classroom
Sally Russ & Jo Glassford

Workshop Outline:
The digital camera is a powerful, readily available tool for use in the junior classroom. We will look at a step-by-step approach to teaching the basic skills and techniques with junior students. View real life examples of student work and resources used to support teaching. Ideas for the sharing and celebrating of student photography will also be explored. Have a go at practical tasks you can use in the classroom.
Presenter Backgrounds:
Sally is a beginning teacher at Nelson Central School. She currently teaches Year 1 students. Jo is in her fifth year of teaching having taught mostly in the junior school yr 0-3. Previously, she has taught a GATE programme for yr 5/6 called Photos as Art.




Working with i-movie HD

Workshop Outline:

Basic tips for using a video camera. Encouraging students to explore as well as plan their camera work. How to import and manipulate photo, video and audio files from your computer or the internet. How to add titles, transitions and credits. Copyrights? How to save and share your movies.
Presenter Background:
Laine is teaching Year 7 at Nelson Intermediate School. He runs weekly student workshops to extend I-movies skills.

Getting Started with an Interactive Whiteboard

Workshop Outline:
Ever wondered what all the fuss is about? Come and share our learning journey from our first term with an Interactive Whiteboard. A workshop for beginners by beginners. Have a look at how we use IWBs in our new entrant and Y2/3 classes. Work through some activities, share ideas and have a go. Even if you don’t have an IWB come and be inspired, see how they can enhance your teaching and your students' learning.
Presenter Backgrounds:
Tracy is a new entrant teacher and Helen has a Y2/3 class. They both teach at Nelson Central School. Tracy & Helen have had Interactive Whiteboards in their classes for 1 term and are keen to pass on the ups and downs of getting to grips with this new technology.




iCan Animate

A hands on illustration of how to use i-Can animate software to enhance learning in your classroom.

Inquiry Learning - Real Learning

Workshop Outline:
This session will describe what we have achieved with Inquiry learning in 2007-2009, how we measure what we achieved and the nexr steps in the journey. We will share some practical solutions on the way to make learning meaningful.
Presenter Background:
Sue is a Senior teacher at Nelson Central School with responsibility for Inquiry Learning. She is also the Middle Syndicate Team Leader. Both Sue and Choi teach year 3/4 classes.

Creating Stories with Photos – Photo Story 3

Workshop Outline:
This workshop will look at what the Photo Story programme is and how it can be used in the classroom to motivate and engage students. You will get ideas for how to get started, and you will be given an overview of how it can be planned into your programme to improve your students' learning. This is a PC programme.
  • Bring along a pen drive with at least 6 photos on it ready to create your own Photo Story.

Etoys - control software that is fun, free and easy to teach
Evelyn Muncaster & Pauline Wallace
Workshop Outline:
Tired of text based ICT? Get into control technology! In this session join two year 5/6 class teachers who have just experienced their first foray into Etoys. Take the Etoys challenge and see if you can get to level 7 without clues. Create your own scripts and challenge each other to move your object around a course. Apple laptops with the downloaded software provided. Links to a 10 min free download available too, this software is cross platform. http://www.squeakland.org/

You Tube & Teacher Tube in the Classroom

Workshop Outline:
This session will cover accessing and using You Tube and Teacher Tube videos to support classroom learning programmes. We will go over how to embed videos in your blog/wiki and also how to download videos to your computer for easy and smooth playback in class. Come along and find out how you can use the wealth of educational material on You Tube and Teacher Tube to enhance your teaching.
Presenter Background:
Tim currently supports ICT with years 3 to 6 at Nelson Central School. He works alongside classroom teachers, supports specialised ICT projects and provides technical media assistance to teachers and students.
